Surgical interventions for valvular heart disease
In addition to their focus on minimally invasive surgery, the surgical team is proficient in the entire spectrum of cardiac surgery, from congenital and acquired diseases to injuries of the heart and the vessels near the heart.
Innovations in minimally invasive heart valve surgery
At the Heart Valve Center, minimally invasive procedures, in which the mitral valve in particular is reached via a right-sided minithoracotomy under video assistance, have established themselves as the standard. The results are comparable to the conventional procedure of open heart surgery.
However, all surgical procedures require the use of the heart-lung machine installed via the inguinal vessels. This is the only way to surgically repair or replace the malformed heart valve on the resting heart. Access is then via a small chest opening on the right side.
Advantages of the minimally invasive method include a reduction in ventilation time and ICU stay, as well as a lower incidence of respiratory failure. Patients also benefit from less pain and bleeding, faster recovery and a better cosmetic result due to the small incision.
Surgical heart valve therapies
In order to be able to offer each patient the best possible individual therapy, the indication for surgery is discussed by the heart team (cardiologists and cardiac surgeons). Most operations are performed in one of the most modern hybrid operating theatres in Europe. This allows us to combine the latest surgical operations with catheter-based procedures in order to offer patients the best possible therapy.
