Surgical aortic valve replacement
In severe diseases (stenosis and/or insufficiency) of the aortic valve.
Surgical aortic valve replacement is recommended in cases of severe aortic valve disease. In this procedure, the calcified aortic valve is carefully removed via the opened aorta and replaced with a biological or mechanical valve prosthesis.
Surgical replacement of the aortic valves
Surgical aortic valve replacement is performed in cases of severe valvular defects, narrowed (stenosed) aortic valve stenosis, leaky (insufficient) aortic valve, or combined diseases (valvular vitium). SAVR stands for Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement.
At the Heart Valve Center, the operation is usually performed minimally invasively without opening the sternum. The patient requires a general anaesthetic and is connected to the heart-lung machine.
Through the opened aorta, the The calcified valve is carefully excised and a biological or mechanical valve prosthesis is sewn into the aortic valve ring.
Surgical aortic valve reconstruction - with preservation of the patient's own natural valve - is performed in cases of leaky (insufficient) aortic valve.
Minimally invasive heart surgery procedures as the standard
A standard of cardiac surgery at the Heart Valve Center are minimally invasive surgical techniques. Whenever possible, our surgeons operate with the video-assisted (Da Vinci robot) keyhole technique.
This allows patients to experience reduced surgical trauma, less pain, faster recovery, and smaller scars as opposed to sternotomy surgery, which is performed through the open sternum.
