Surgical reconstruction of the mitral valve
Minimally-invasive surgical mitral valve repair (MVRepair)
Surgical reconstruction of the mitral valve is recommended in cases of disease or malformation of the mitral valve. In this procedure, the diseased mitral valve is reconstructed through the opened left atrium. A successful repair restores the natural tight valve function.
Surgical reconstruction of the mitral valve
Surgical reconstruction of the mitral valve is performed in case of a leaky (insufficient) valve. Only the optimal interaction of the four components of the mitral valve - two leaflets, suspension of the leaflets in the valve ring, tendon sutures and papillary muscles - guarantees a perfect opening and tight closure of the mitral valve.
The most important advantage of valve reconstruction is the preservation of the patient's own natural valve, whereby the goal is the restoration of the anatomical conditions. If the rhythm is stable, the use of anticoagulant medication can be dispensed with in the long term.
During the operation, the patient requires a general anaesthetic and is connected to the heart-lung machine via the inguinal vessels. At the Heart Valve Center, the operation is usually performed using minimally invasive surgical procedures via a small access in the intercostal space.
Minimally invasive heart surgery as a standard procedure
A standard of cardiac surgery at the Heart Valve Center are minimally invasive surgical techniques. Whenever possible, our surgeons operate using the video-assisted (Da Vinci robot) keyhole technique.
This allows patients to experience reduced surgical trauma, less pain, faster recovery, and smaller scars as opposed to sternotomy surgery, which is performed through the open sternum.
